World Health Day 2021: Building a Fairer and Healthier World for Everyone

Health is important, and your health is likely always top of mind for you. However, over the last year health has also topped the headlines, making World Health Day more critical than ever. This year's theme focuses on building a fairer, healthier world.

History of World Health Day

World Health Day is held each year on April 7th. World Health Day was first celebrated in 1948 at the First Health Assembly. It took effect globally in 1950. Each year, World Health Day celebrates a theme that the World Health Organization (WHO) wants to bring awareness to. In the past, the day has brought attention to mental health, maternal and child care, and the effect climate change has on health.

Building a Fairer, Healthier World for Everyone

Did you know that at least half of the world's people don't receive the health services they need? That's why this year's theme focuses on trying to bring equality in health across the globe. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought health inequalities throughout the world to the forefront. Some people have received better healthcare than others simply because of where they live, work, and were born. The inequities are entirely preventable, and that's why WHO is calling on leaders throughout the world to ensure that everyone has living and working conditions that allow for access to proper healthcare. Leaders will be encouraged to work together globally to foster better health environments.

How You Can Help During World Health Day

You might be thinking that this is all about the world and local government leadership. However, there are several things that you can do to help. It all surrounds communication, having conversations with your local and federal leaders about health care inequality. Share stories that you know with the media. Along with having talks, hold the policymakers accountable for improving health. Finally, share WHO stories and posts on your social platforms. Take the time to understand more about World Health Day Wednesday, April 7th.
